VSAT for Somalia (SCPC BW)

Several sat Internet providers offers satellite dsl services in Somalia. Usually they are based on the iDirect solution and as indoor unit uses a small hardware box, that includes standard routing features.

VSAT for Somalia (SCPC BW)

Hi all,

Could somebody suggest a good bandwidth provider for Somalia - VSAT on a C-band? I am about to setup a new VSAT system, I have had quotes from several companies for the hardware and they are all apparently rather expensive.

My main concern is the monthly charge for the dedicated bandwidth that these resellers charge, I have had a quote for a 64/64kbps SCPC BW for $650/month, can this price be beaten, if so please let me know. If I can get more quotes for hardware side of things that would be brilliant too. Your assistance will be highly appreciated.

Cheers, Asad

Dear Asad,

Finding a company that beats that price will be hard, I'm sure. Besides, even if it is sold as a full SCPC, I doubt that it will be at that price, so please check thoroughly what it actually is that you are offered. If you want to know more about the services my company offers, please contact me directly.

Best regards,

An SCPC carrier (or dedicated continuous capacity within a larger carrier) is priced higher, perhaps 10, 20 or 30 times higher price, because they provide you with dedicated capacity. If you have shared capacity the price is less since there are many other people paying simultaneously for the same capacity - but sharing it - with a risk of congestion over which you will have little control.

If you just plan intermittent web browsing then shared use is fine - your download bit rate may be only 3 kbit/s averaged over a week, so there is time for others as the short term burstable bit rate will be much higher, typically between 64 kbit/s and 2 Mbit/s.

If your intended use is VoIP phone calls or continuous video streaming then dedicated continuous information rate (CIR) capacity is preferred, despite the higher cost.

To mention that you can look for a hybrid service which can provide you with both BIR (Burstable, shared) and CIR (Committed, dedicated) bandwidth quotas.

In this configuration you use inexpensive and broadband BIR for browsing, e-mails, file downloads Internet usage and a narrow band CIR quota for real time traffic, i.e. streaming applications like VoIP or Videoconferencing. Just be sure that the satellite ISP does not oversubscribe the CIR quota they provide and make sure there's an SLA indicating that you will receive X amount of CIR bandwidth on a 24/7 basis.
