VOIP And WildBlue (Xplornet)

Postby strm22 » Sat Mar 10, 2007 4:37 pm

Hi All,

Am wondering if anyone is using VOIP with Xplornet and what kind of quality are you getting.

I have been reading some mixed reviews on VOIP and Sat Internet.

Also if you are using VOIP and are happy with it, what package do you have with Xplornet.

Thanks

VOIP And WildBlue (Xplornet)

Postby wolf » Fri Apr 06, 2007 3:10 pm

Unlike the US, all VOIP works pretty well on Xplornet. But there is a noticable awkward period of several seconds when first connecting. This is due to the bandwidth on demand of the Surfbeam modem. It takes several seconds to get bandwidth approval and after that it is usually great.

There are many of us in my area using Vonage but all systems work. Some though may work a little better than others or have more features, local area codes, etc. Most home users in my area are using the basic 500/128 package but Voip can suffer during peak times. I use 1000/256 during the winter months and up to 2000/500 during the summer for our store. All the local logging camps have now switched from expensive satellite phones to VOIP over Xplornet.

Telesat and Xplornet will be introducing their own VOIP later this year. Last word is that it will be at least several more months.

Keep in mind that even the best VOIP over satellite internet has a delay of just over 500 msec.

What is the impact of latency on internet phone calls?

Postby Tomy » Mon Apr 23, 2007 7:30 pm

Your right about the latency, even though they expressed they have new Technology that reduces latency, but could affect VoIP.

What is the impact of latency? Can I play real-time Internet games or make Internet phone calls on your service?

The wildblue system is engineered to help offset the impact of latency. However, there is a delay of about a quarter second as the signal travels up to the satellite and back down to the ground. For most Internet applications this latency does not affect performance, however, there are some applications like voice over IP, or real-time interactive gaming, where latency will have a noticeable effect on performance over the wildblue network.

I would be interested to see is it works acceptably, but I would keep in mind the 14 day trial just in case. ==== Tomy

Try Vonage for a month

Postby KDWych » Tue Apr 24, 2007 4:47 pm

After review of the website it appears that the download/upload of even the cheapest plan would be fine for one or two vonage lines. The only concern I would have is the lagtime of the satellite internet connection. I have not seen alot of replies about satellite internet. Only thing I could suggest is to try VONAGE for a month and see how it goes before you ditch your landline phone.
