QoS on the gilat skyedge ip modem

Postby gilatVoIP » Tue Oct 27, 2009 2:21 am

Hi, I havee been interested in using voip on my satellite connection for a while now and been looking into how to achieve this in the best possible why. The main issues I have found out are latency and packet prioritization of Voip packets. My question is, does the Skyedge ip modem (concave with an LCD screen on the Optus platform) have a quality of service feature, or is this only found in routers?

Only found in routers.

I have found when your using VSAT to provide VOIP, it is all about the service plans. Its really about contiengousy, if you look for other providers who can still use this Gilat platform but have a high contengousy VOIP will not work. We have successfully set up VOIP over VSAT. Latency really wasn't an issue

There is QoS in the Gilat SkyEdge modems, but it is only configurable from the HUB station.
The modem downloads the profile over the air from the HUB. i.e. the end user cannot
manipulate it at all.

Hi thanks for the replies, so i guess i should be purchasing a router which has QoS functionality to make sure Voip packets are prioritised before they go through the satellite system.

Won't make any difference.

If you're using a Skyedge IP you'll be on Optus' network..

VOIP traffic needs priority at the Hub (server side), buying a router won't do anything for you.

Actually there are 2 places where prioritisation needs to be done. As mentioned before @ the ISP's server and as well @ your end. There are number router/ voip boxes that do this. Found Linksys RT31P2 works better than Netgear TA612V on satellite. Optus sat does not provide voip prioritisation. The problem is limited uplink speed by the Optus sever missing up packets with the effect that parts of words have silent gap as with a bad mobile phone connection. If the ISP can lift the upload say around 80-90kbps then this problem diminishes. From time to time when the link is good my voice is ok @ the recipients end. Have used Skype peer to peer which works well as the PC's retry on missing packets. To use voip on satellite there are some differences.

1. link delay about 2.5 sec round trip
2. There other effect is the phone operates more like a simplex 2 way radio

My next test is use a CIT400 to get around the low uplink connection. Will post the results in the next couple of weeks.
