MAC connected to Skystar 360E drops http

Postby sepekue » Wed Nov 18, 2009 5:49 pm

Has anyone had these symptoms?

Randomly my internet connection stops serving my browser requests. Other internet programs (mail client, rss readers, news reader) continue to receive requests. It looks like http requests are no longer accepted. I need to restart the modem to get http requests handled. I think that this happens when my rss reader is running, when it periodically refreshes the feeds.

My set up is a MAC connected to a Gilat Skystar 360E.

Check if you have the latest firmware for the 360e. I think there can be issues in this respect. Being on a Mac, you will have problems updating firmware, because all the programmers will be for PC. Check with your ISP what the latest firmware version is.

However, it's more likely to be the service which is at fault.

You could also be swamping the 360E with to many http requests at once.

It has to keep track of each request until all the data is retrieved from the hub and sent to your browser. If you make to many requests OR if your bandwidth is not big enough to service all your requests they bank up in the modem till it runs out of buffers.

Firmware upgrades are normally done over the air from the Optus hub by applying templates during their periodic updates/outages. If the modem was off when an upgrade occurred it should get it the next time you turn it on (it will recognize the different version, reboot/resequence itself twice instead of once).

Generally the support for Linux/Unix and Macs is not great because there's too many flavours and the user of these OS's is normally more IT literate. Also the use of the service is based on the browser abilities and therefore makes it non platform dependant.
