how to share satellite internet?

Postby amirshahzadafzal19 » Wed Aug 19, 2009 10:47 pm

I want to share my one-way satellite internet connection to 50 users (with wired network) on different locations (10meters to 1000meters), but I don't know how to do this, i mean what programs have to be installed on my main pc and client pc's, to monitor the users?. I don't want to use hardware router, so what software is required?. Another question is, that what type of cable's are best for long distance Lan(300meters to 1000meters)?, what is difference between UTP, STP and coaxial cables?, how many types of switchs, and which type is best for me?. I am looking for answers of all these questions, thanks.

In my opinion, a one-way connection was NOT created (as a design/technology etc.) to be shared on more than 3-4-5 PC's. If you actually must share it, then you would have to use at least a 256 Kbps cable connection for upload. (256 / 50 = 5,12 Kbps upload per user, which is OK)

The difference between the different types of UTP cables are the quality, an data integrity. Without using amplifiers the best UTP cable would go 200 meters maximum (personal aproximation) and it actually depends upon whether. In bad whether conditions trafic ma be slower, and network performance accordingly.

You can use switches, according to how much distribution points you may need.

A BNC (coaxial) network may go further, but is greatly depreciated and is no longer used (network cards and switches also). And is 10 Mbit maximum , not 10/100/1000 like UTP technology.

IF you need to go 1000 meters with UTP cable you may use switches from 200m to 200 m, or use optic- fiber (aprox 1000 USD per KM, including terminals and fiber suture)

For a software router, you may use Win 2000 Server/Advanced Server or Windows 2003, if you prefer Microsoft, of any *NIX system.

Good Luck

I am not qualified to address your network concept, but I question your plan for fifty users to share one dial-up connection. At a minimum, you would have to make some arrangement with the terrestrial ISP to keep your phone connection "live" and uninterrupted on a 24/7 basis. Even at that, up to 50 users competing for simultaneous bandwidth on a phone line sounds like a bottleneck to me.
