In my opinion, a one-way connection was NOT created (as a design/technology etc.) to be shared on more than 3-4-5 PC's. If you actually must share it, then you would have to use at least a 256 Kbps cable connection for upload. (256 / 50 = 5,12 Kbps upload per user, which is OK)
The difference between the different types of UTP cables are the quality, an data integrity. Without using amplifiers the best UTP cable would go 200 meters maximum (personal aproximation) and it actually depends upon whether. In bad whether conditions trafic ma be slower, and network performance accordingly.
You can use switches, according to how much distribution points you may need.
A BNC (coaxial) network may go further, but is greatly depreciated and is no longer used (network cards and switches also). And is 10 Mbit maximum , not 10/100/1000 like UTP technology.
IF you need to go 1000 meters with UTP cable you may use switches from 200m to 200 m, or use optic- fiber (aprox 1000 USD per KM, including terminals and fiber suture)
For a software router, you may use Win 2000 Server/Advanced Server or Windows 2003, if you prefer Microsoft, of any *NIX system.
Good Luck
